  On-Farm Heifer Competition

Wednesday 24th March 2010

The Ashburton A&P Association annual On-Farm Dairy Heifer Competition is to be judged on Wednesday 24th March 2010.

Convenor Victor Schikker said “The competition has been running for nine years and was deemed very successful with willing support being obtained from Farmers and Sponsors”.   Around 40 entries are received annually for the competition which this year will see Mid Canterbury running two competitions with Methven A&P holding an On Farm Heifer Competition for the first time. Mr Schikker is confident entries will be as strong for this year’s event.

The competition will be confined to the Ashburton District Boundaries (Rakaia to the Rangitata Rivers) with all stock East of Thompson’s Track being judged at the Ashburton event and Methven taking all entrants on the West Side

Mr Schikker welcomes the participation of farmers and graziers and stresses the competition is easy to enter and rewarding to competitors.

Competition Classes for both Associations are:-

            1.  Rising 1 year Heifers born since 1.7.09

2.  Rising 2 year Heifers born since 1.7.08

            3.   Best line of graziers 1 year Heifers

            4.   Best line of graziers 2 year Heifers

5.  Group of spring born Rising Yearlings to be judged on B.W., type and condition.

Two Trophies will also be presented at Ashburton - “Best presented line of Heifers” and the “Best Presented Line of Graziers Heifers”. Businesses have also responded generously with sponsorship.

Winners from this event carry on to participate in the Canterbury On Farm Heifer Competition to be judged on the 7th & 8th April. This Competition will involve the Amuri, Ashburton, Ellesmere, Oxford, Northern Waimate and this year we welcome Methven A&P Association following their own On-Farm Competitions.  The winners of each Association’s Rising 1 year Heifers and Rising 2 year Heifers will represent that Association in the Canterbury Dairy Heifer Competition.

Mr Schikker invites farmers’ interest and reminds them the closing date for Ashburton entries is on Friday 13th March.  Entry forms and details may be obtained by contacting Mr Schikker on 307-0668 or Ashburton A&P Association Secretary Jo Seymour on 308-7908, fax 302-5665, Email ashap@farmside.co.nz.
